Two weeks ago I heard that Mary Anne (Dan’s mom) was having the grandkids over her house to decorate gingerbread houses. Now for someone who’s not a Me-Too person and veers away from the usual, I heard my inner child say, “ME, TOO! ME, TOO!!!”
I’ve never had or made a gingerbread house in my entire life, but one’s never too old to try something new. Thankfully, Dan was kind enough to indulge me on my whim. After having the house up for a week, we finally decorated it the other night.

I think we did a mighty fine job! Haha. And yeah, we’re cheesy as cheese, what with our names on the roof (picture #4) and our initials (picture #3). I love the ‘shrubs’ that Dan placed by the door and at the side. So easily amused, you see.
I loved making it but I’m not sure if I want to do it again. It was so messy and those hardened icing on the carpet and table were taunting me. And as a perfectionist, it took a lot to just flow with my sloppy icing jobs. I think as you get older, you learn to let go and just have fun. Sometimes the cookies aren’t perfect, the dish isn’t as fabulous as you expect it to be, and it’s OK. And that’s the lesson for today.

That was some cool gingerbread house! I too have never had nor made (nor eaten) one, but the way you described it was really interesting. Anyway, what you said is really true: the outcome might not be perfect, but the fun in making it is its own reward. Keep on cooking – ideas and whatever!!!
You’ve got to be kidding me with this first attempt. It’s adorable and now I’m feeling very inadequate. My first, and only, attempt at making a Gingerbread House is at the bottom of some landfill by now. It’s a sad story.
Pa & Ma — Thanks! We will keep on cookin’!
Well why don’t you get a kit and we’ll build one when I get there? :-) Sounds like a plan to me!
Mary Anne — Thanks! Please don’t feel inadequate, it wasn’t meant to make you feel that way. I’m sure the next house will be a success. Ask Dan to make the icing — he did a great job with ours.
What an adorable gingerbread house! I’d expect nothing less coming from your hands, Joy! :-)
Thanks Nikki! I’m thinking of making the gingerbread from scratch next time…haha. We’ll see how THAT goes.
