Here’s a little diversion from food: views of my city! I’m still here, and as Dan has mentioned, until the end of the month. Here’s why — I’ve earned myself a painful award for over-working in front of the computer: radiculitis. I’ve been getting regular treatments, and have been strongly advised to avoid the computer as much as possible, thus the lack of blogging. It’s not fun waiting and watching the slow progress, which I thought wouldn’t come after three weeks. Anyway, I won’t delve on that…just wanted to let you know what’s going on, and warn you not to be like me!
Let’s talk about Vancouver and one of my favorite places to go to on the weekends — Stanley Park. It’s a thousand acre park that’s almost like an island, but not really. It’s this huge mass of land protruding into the sea, so you can see water all around it. Although you can get your nature fix pretty much anywhere here, this is my favorite go-to place.
Last Saturday I rented a bike and went around the park. It was a beautiful spring day so everyone was out enjoying the sunshine. It’s an afternoon that Vancouverites wouldn’t miss sitting in couches at home. At least, one would think with the amount of people roaming that day.

I love the seawall goes around the park, which gives me a different view at every turn. Sometimes, it just takes my breath away.

The seawall has separate lanes for people on foot and those on bikes or roller blades. You can rent the latter two near the entrance of the park. I rent a bike all the time.
You can sit on one of the benches and just watch. I used to go here after work to unwind with a book, or just be.

There’s always something to see as you go on your walk or ride, including sculptures like this one on the rock. I swear, I always thought (and was told!) through more than 8 years of living here, that it was a mermaid. Oh, for crying out loud, I just looked at her slowly last weekend and she’s in a wet suit with flippers and goggles. Shame!

That said, I enjoy being a tourist in my own city. I always discover something new to take home with me each time I look hard enough (and you really don’t have to look that hard in Vancouver). The contrast in ‘death’ and ‘new life’ in this for example:

Or just the sheer beauty if you just take the time to look.

I wanted to pick the clouds and take them with me. Instead I’ve taken a photo of it to share with you.
Hope you enjoyed this little ‘trip’. There will be more pictures from the park…after some food later. :-)

3Ben — Thanks! Haha…good to hear. :D
Katy — It’s a great place to run, indeed. I don’t run (knees hurt), but a lot of people have their regular run there. Also, this coming weekend, part of Canada’s 10K Sun Run is on Stanley Park.

4Beautiful! We’ve been talking about making a trip to Portland, Oregon, and Seattle. We may just have to extend it up to Vancouver. I’ve always heard wonderful things about it.

10Hi Joy, wishing you a speedy recovery! Those photos that you take are simply beautiful. My personal favorite is the one contrasting ‘life’ and ‘death.’ Truly amazing! I remembered a quotation that goes something like this, “Life begins where it ended.” It couldn’t be more true.

11Terry B — Definitely extend your trip all the way here! Good food, beautiful place. :) Hehe…I’m so biased, eh?
Elle — Thanks! I’m getting there. **crosses fingers**
Robin — Thank you!
Debbie — Thanks! Haha…the sunshine disappeared and left us with rain and snow. Yikes.
Farida — Thanks! Yeah, that was pretty embarrassing. :)
Sandy — Woman, you better go back here. I guess who haven’t eat much around here either???
BK — Thank you!

12Thank you for the trip report and the photos - I haven’t been to Vancouver in probably 10 years, and hope to return soon. A friend of mine is married to a woman from China, so they are quite particular about Chinese cuisine. They swear that Vancouver has the best selection of Asian-focused restaurants on the West coast. The Indian food choices are also apparently exceptional (something that is sorely lacking here in Portland).
Wishing you a very speedy recovery!
